The Lea County Sheriff’s Office arrested two suspects Wednesday evening on burglary and other vehicle related offenses following a suspicious vehicle call in Hobbs.

On Wednesday, at approximately 5 p.m., sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 9900 block of North Monarch Drive for a suspicious vehicle. A caller reported individuals outside a brown in color van unloading property into another vehicle. When deputies arrived in the area they observed a van that was seen leaving the area. The vehicle appeared to be having engine problems. A deputy stopped the vehicle at State Road 18 and Frontage road. The vehicle driver was identified as, Billy Wayne Rogers, 33, of Hobbs. A records check showed the brown van was reported stolen from the City of Hobbs on Wednesday.

A passenger located inside the vehicle was identified as Drake Griffin 28, of Alamogordo. It was observed Griffin had red in color paint on his left arm. It was also observed the brown van had business decals covered with red paint.

It was determined during the investigation, both Rogers and Griffin, had removed several items without authorization from the van such as hand tools, drill, hammer drill, extension ladder and copper wire. All property, which was removed from the van, was recovered by the sheriff’s office at a residence in the 9900 block of North Monarch Drive.

Rogers was charged with burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary and receiving or transferring stolen vehicle or motor vehicles, all fourth-degree felonies. No bond was set at the time of the arrest. He also had an outstanding arrest warrant for unlawful taking of a motor vehicle out of Otero County with bond set at $5,000 cash or surety, in addition to an outstanding arrest order for the State of New Mexico Corrections Department, Probation and Parole Division, with no bond.

Griffin was charged with burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, all fourth-degree felonies. No bond was set at the time of arrest.

Both suspects were booked without incident at the Lea County Detention Center in Lovington.
