The Hobbs Public Library is turning into a science laboratory once a month throughout the year.

Hobbs students in the fourth through eighth grades are invited to participate in the Hobbs Library new program called Got Science?!? The new program will have students participating in a hands-on workshop that will be run by Science Spectrum instructors from Lubbock.

“It’s a series of eight programs,” said Sandy Farrell, Hobbs Public Library director. “The programs are designed to be interactive and hands-on. We don’t just have a person that stand up there (and talks). Each student will receive a book, game or activity. The whole purpose is designed for it to be educational and to enhance their interest in science.”

The first program called Crazy Chemistry was held Wednesday. The next seven programs include Grossology (Oct. 11), Curious Case of CSI (Nov. 8), Holiday Science (Dec. 13), Dissect This! (Jan. 10), Engineering (Feb. 14), Space Science (March 14) and Flight Fanatics (April 11). The programs are free of charge, but there is a 25 student limit. To register call 575-397-9328.

“We are now taking sign-ups for our October program and it’s about half full at this time,” Farrell said. “The Science Spectrum of Lubbock will be bringing an instructor and their curriculum. Our hope is that many youngsters in our neighborhood would take advantage of the program perhaps some them do not have the resources to participate in after-school programs that they have to pay for like sports, dance and music.”

Got Science?!? is a $5,000 program, which is funded through a United Way of Lea County grant and the Friends of the Library. Kay Hannum, Friends of the Hobbs Public Library chairwoman, said she applied for the grant to help fund a program that would benefit children in grades fourth through eighth.

“We do a lot for the little kids ages two to five through the year and we do a lot for the kids from the age four to 10 and 12 during the summer reading program and something for the upper-aged kids through a book club,” Hannum said. “We’re not doing anything for the kids from fourth grade to eighth grade. (The Library officials) are the ones that came up with the idea (of Got Science?!?) and I’m the person who wrote the grant for it.”

The Friends of the Hobbs Public Library were awarded a $4,000 grant from United Way of Lea County. The Friends of the Public Library picked up the extra cost to offer Got Science?!?

“We’re so fortunate to have (Hannum) as the chairwoman Of the Friends group or we wouldn’t have this grant,” Farrell said. “She was the mover and the shaker behind getting this grant.”

Hannum said the Library’s new program will have kids talking about science and sharing what they learn with their families and friends.

“I think it’s going to be a super wonderful experience for the kids who get to be a part of it,” Hannum said. “These kids are not going to go home and not talk about things. They are going to share and brag to their classmates about what everything was like (at Got Science?!?). Even though the in-class training has to be limited there are going to be more kids that benefit from this than those who participate.”
